Richard, Fabian Joseph - 85, River Bourgeois, passed away peacefully in the Veterans Wing at St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish on Wednesday, January 25, 2012. He was a son of the late Charles and Vina (Landry) Richard.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, River Bourgeois, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 47, St. Peters and the seniors club. Fabian served in the Merchant Marines and continued to sail after the war. After sailing Fabian attended bricklaying school in Sydney and graduated 1st in his class. Between 1951-1971 his career would take him to more than 65 jobs mostly in the Halifax area and layed the first brick in the building of Scotia Square. Fabian worked on Citadel Hill rebuilding the forts till his retirement in 1986, returning to River Bourgeois for a peaceful retirement. He was known for his woodworking and his crafts have found homes around the world.

Fabian is survived by children, David, Halifax; Theresa (Paul) Owens, Riverton; Paul (Lorraine), New Market, Ontario; grandchildren, Tracy, Tanya, Robin, Tiffany, Patricia, Marcus and Katie. The biggest joy in his life the last few years was the company of his great-grandchildren, Alex, Krislan, Katelyn, Leah and Jessica better known as the golden girls. He is also survived by brothers, Clarence, Leo, Tony and John and sisters, Gerry and Monica. Fabian was predeceased by his loving wife, Casilda (Sampson); two sons in infancy, brothers, Alfred, Martin, Egbert and sister, Rita.

Visitation will take place Friday 2-9 p.m. in the River Bourgeois Community Funeral Home. Funeral mass will take place 11a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church with Father Dennis Lamey officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery. Legion members of Branch 47 are requested to attend.
